The last day in Scarlino was a tricky day and the experience in light conditions put the former ISA president Karl Haist his son Simon Haist and to win the last race of the event followed by the Skandia Team ARG 34 with Martin Busch, Tomas Peuvrel and Maximo Feldtmann who kept climbing at the overall results and finishing third.
The battle for the trophy was in between SLO 1 (Bostjan Antoncic, Gennadi Strakh and Karlo Hmeljak) and the Team Edding ARG 32 (Gustavo Warburg, Hernen Celedoni and Maximo Smith), they sailed close together the whole race but always in front the Slovenian team. This performance gave SLO 1 the title at the 2008 World championship.
Team Ramadabalaton who were fighting for the title at the beggining of the week ended up at the 4th place, Buddy GER 304 with Thomas Maschkiwitz, Christian Oheler and Christian Haake took the 5th place and the SUI 277 with Henrik Dannesboe, Edward Morey and Silvan Hoffer ended up at the 5th place.
At the top ten you find Slovenia, Argentina, Hungary, Germany, Switzerland, Canada, Brasil and Norway.
Every after race at the Marina, the pasta was waiting for the sailors, and although the Gala Dinner was not up to most sailors expectations the racing in the water, the weather, the competidors and the level of sailing granted an event that will be easy remembered.
The Paul Elvstrom Trophy for age 28 and under was awarded to Stefan Glanz from AUT 114 who also finished 12th and the best from Austria. And the Classic KC 1 trophy was awarded to USA 853 with Matias Collins, Jaime Martinez and Enrique Mich for best placed boat built before January 1st of 1980, sailing an Abbott from 1979 amongst other 9 boats, second was ITa 201 with Michele Tognozzi, Leonardo Saletti, Giulano Carotti and third FRA 199 with Christian Jozan, Philippe Montecot and Philippe Jozan also sailing a boat from 75.
The note was the return from the French with three teams and also the Suiss, the Argentinians that also came with three teams and their Yacht Club - "Club Nautico San Isidro" former Worlds organizer who ended up sending 4 teams, a former Comodore and lots of family to support their sailors despite the long trip.
And although Germany best result was a 5th at this time, the amount of teams who take the time to travel to Scarlino shows how strong the fleet is moving around.
The next edition of the worlds will be in Toronto next 2009 during the first weeks of September, social program, rental boat list and logisitics are at the top of the list in the organization. The event website will be up at the end of October.
