Soling World Championship in Scarlino Tuscany. Slovenian Antoncic leads the scoreboard. Surprises all around in the fourth day of racing.

Maremma Marina di Scarlino September 17h 2008 – Yet another wonderful sunny day in Maremma Tuscany for the sailors taking part in the Soling World Championship at La Marina di Scarlino. The 40 crews from Argentina, Austria, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, France, Great Britain, Germany, Hungary, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Slovenia, Switzerland, the USA and Italy raced in a southwesterly breeze between 6 and 12 knots. Two races were completed today and tomorrow the last race will kick off at 12 p.m.

At the end of Day 4 Slovenian Bosjan Antoncic leads the provisional scoreboard with 27 points, followed by Argentinean Gustavo Warburg at 31 points and Hungarian George Wossala 41.

Race 7 started a little after 1 p.m. once the breeze had settled and built up to a constant 6-7 knots. The fleet sailed the first beat following the pristine hills of Maremma and tacking away on front of Cala VIolina, one of Italy’s most beautiful coves. After three with windward – leeward legs Slovenian Bostjan Antoncic cut the finish line, followed by Argentinean Martin Busch and Canadian Hall in third position.

The Race Committee fired the gun for Race 8 fifteen minutes after the conclusion of the first one. The windward mark had been moved towards the Island of Elba to reflect a wind shift to the right. The fleet stormed the line and then split evenly up the race course. One hour and ten minutes later German Tomas Maschkiwitz finished first, Argentinean Martin Busch second and Slovenian Bostjan Antoncic third.

The forth day of racing at the Soling World Championship offered many surprises. Tuesday Gustavo Warburg had been disqualified for failing to complete a penalty, while today Hungarian Wossala, German Koch and Austrian Auteried called over the line early.

Tomorrow the final race is scheduled.

The Soling World Championship has been organized by the Club Nautico Scarlino, in collaboration with the International Soling Association, the International Sailing Federation, the Italian Sailing Federation (FIV) and the committee Circoli Velici della Costa Etrusca.

The event has the patronage and support of the Province of Grosseto, the Municipality of Scarlino, La Marina di Scarlino and Consorzio Etruria.
